"Pursuing a More Global and Ethical History of Art"

Deborah Hutton is one of the lead authors of the first major art history survey textbook of the 21st century. In this lecture, she shares insights about the global, interwoven nature of art from prehistorical times to our present day. Her work on this project has coincided with social movements nationwide and across the world, which have prompted searching conversations across academic disciplines about diversifying and decolonizing our curricula. In this context, Hutton argues, seeing beyond Eurocentric and nationalist views creates an art history that is not only more ethical and inclusive but also more vital to our students’ intellectual growth.
